Richard started with Cotney Construction Law in 2020 following his graduation from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Prior to starting law school, Richard worked in oilfield services as a roustabout and as a floor hand on a workover oil well services rig. In his role, Richard completed oilfield plumbing projects which connected wellhead units to standing tank batteries and pipelines, served as a frac-services technician, performed duties as member of a carpentry crew building treater unit and pump-shack housing, and performed maintenance and service on existing oil wells. Richard received OSHA 10 and Niobara Field Certification while performing oilfield duties in North Dakota, Montana, Colorado, and Nebraska. Through his experience, Richard gained insight to both the challenges and rewards of the construction industry.
Richard received his law degree from the UF College of Law, where he served as the Executive Vice President of the Florida Trial Team, Treasurer of the Christian Legal Society, Treasurer of the College of Law Republicans, and Director of External Affairs for the Federalist Society. Richard also founded, organized, and fundraised the Gator Law Adoption Day celebration which hosted the adoption of over forty children into new families at the Martin Levin Advocacy Center on UF’s campus.
While still a law student, Richard represented himself pro se in his father’s estate and successfully argued an interlocutory appeal of an order determining homestead in front of the Second District Court of Appeals.
Josh started with Cotney Construction Law in 2018 while in law school at FSU College of Law. Prior to starting law school, Josh worked for a national general contracting company as an assistant superintendent specializing in student housing and large-scale multi-family residential projects. In his role, Josh managed relationships between the owners, subcontractors, and local city or county inspectors to ensure each project was performed efficiently and cost-effectively. Through these many interactions, Josh gained a unique perspective into the issues that affect the construction industry along with strategic approaches to project management.
Josh received his law degree from the FSU College of Law, where he served as Executive Online Publications Editor of the FSU Law Review and a member of the FSU Trial Team.
John Kenney is the Chief Operating Officer at Cotney Construction Law. Prior to joining Cotney, John had 45 years of experience in the construction industry. John started his career by working as a roofing apprentice at a family business in the Northeast. He also managed many successful projects in the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania markets before continuing his accomplishments in Florida. Because of his skill and hard work, he progressed from roofing laborer to foreman, estimator, chief estimator, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer with his various companies.
John has worked for multiple Top 100 Roofing Contractors and is intimately familiar with all aspects of roofing production, estimating, and operations. In his last role, John was responsible for the daily operations and performance of a large commercial roofing contractor. During his tenure, John ran business units associated with delivering excellent workmanship and unparalleled customer service while ensuring healthy net profits for his company.
John also volunteers his time as a member of the Board of Directors for the West Coast Roofing Contractors Association. He has been involved with the organization for the last 20 years and currently serves as its President. One of John’s great joys is volunteering with many industry organizations, along with mentoring and giving back to the community.
Kelly Tanner joined Cotney Construction Law in March of 2018. Her role as Marketing Associate called on her to help the Customer Service department fulfill the goal of delivering “Wow!” customer service to each new and current client.
With 5 years’ experience in the customer service industry, Kelly is instrumental in ensuring customer experiences are remarkable at Cotney Construction Law. In 2019, Kelly’s role expanded to Client Services Coordinator, a role that also calls on Kelly to oversee engagement letters, conflict checks, lead
conversion analysis & reporting, and more.
Kelly isn’t new to the construction industry. In fact, she grew up in it and received early on-the-job training while working for her mother’s roofing company.
Prior to joining Cotney Construction Law, Kelly worked in player development at a local casino and carried out several internships en route to earning a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of South Florida.
Anita Lum is Cotney Construction Law’s Marketing Manager where she is responsible for managing all marketing efforts of the firm including social media campaigns, association events & trade shows, advertising opportunities, and market research.
Anita is a graduate of Boston College. Prior to joining Cotney Construction Law, she planned events for an organization that housed several professional engineering and land surveying associations in Boston, Massachusetts.
